Video observation and coaching to support teachers’ professional development

Researchers at Birmingham University conducted an evaluation of a pilot for IRIS Connect, a programme to support teachers’ professional development by filming and reviewing their lessons. The evaluation aimed to find out whether IRIS Connect could be used to improve primary teachers’ use of feedback, and ultimately improve pupil outcomes by changing teacher practice and ethos across a school.
Eleven primary schools took part in the development pilot for IRIS Connect, and used cameras and microphones to record lessons in the classroom. The recorded lessons were shared between schools via an online platform, and reviewed at ‘film club’ events.
The results of the evaluation, published by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), found moderate evidence of change in teachers’ thinking and moderate evidence of changes in practice. However, the majority of teachers believed that the intervention was a good use of the time and had improved their teaching.
